So, we're lending the Irish the princely sum of £7 billion to help them out of the hole they've dug for themselves. Did you know that £7 billion is the total lifetime earnings of almost 6 million British people? Nice to think that our government values our life and work so lightly. Harry Enfield as “Loads of Money”. Guess where we found this image? On a 2007 Irish financial website called Dublin Opinion. Ironic or what? In case you wondered, this is how we worked it out ... The internet tells us the average annual earnings in the UK are £26,075, so our average lifetime earnings, assuming we work from age 20 to age 65, are £1,173,375. Divided into £7 billion that makes 5,965,697 average workers. We've used the British billion (a million millions), not the American one (a paltry thousand million. Bloody cheapskates). If you find any errors in this calculation, it's probably the fault of our education. I expect our teachers didn't cane us enough. If the calculation is correct, however, that proves ... well, something. I just can't think what it is. Don't worry, I'll work it out eventually ... either on this site or on the World Wide Web.
